Agency takeover: move your website away from another agency without the risk

We take over websites and apps from agencies and developers who have gone quiet or closed. First we secure ownership and audit the code under NDA; then we document everything, fix what is urgent and look after it on a monthly plan.

The guide

How to take over a website from another agency

Agencies close, change focus or simply stop replying. When that happens the risk is not the code itself. It is not knowing who owns the domain, where the site is hosted, whether backups exist or which plugins are years out of date.

We start by establishing ownership: domains, DNS, hosting, repositories, analytics and third-party accounts. Then we audit the code and infrastructure under NDA, fix anything urgent and write down how everything works, so you are never dependent on one supplier again, including us.

Signs you need this

  • Your agency takes weeks to reply, or has stopped replying
  • You are not sure who owns your domain or hosting
  • Nobody can say when the site was last updated
  • Small changes are quoted at large prices

Risks we remove

What usually goes wrong with agency takeover projects, and what we do about it.

01

Losing access to your own site

Domains, hosting and repositories are moved into accounts you own first.

02

Breaking something during handover

The audit is read-only; nothing changes until backups are tested.

03

Swapping one dependency for another

Runbooks and documentation are written for whoever comes next.

Worked example

A typical takeover

A training company’s WordPress site was built by an agency that has stopped replying. The domain is registered in the agency’s name and nobody knows where backups live. In week one we confirm what the company owns and start the domain transfer.

The audit finds 23 outdated plugins and no working backups. Backups and monitoring go live first, then updates are applied on staging and tested. By week three everything is in the company’s own accounts, documented and on a care plan.

An illustrative example of how we would run this kind of project, not a client case study.

Agency takeover: questions, answered

What if our agency will not cooperate?
Most handovers are cooperative. Where they are not, we work from what you own: domain registrar, hosting account and any repository access. We tell you early what is missing and what it means.
Do we need the source code?
Ideally yes. If you only have server access we can usually recover the deployed code, then put it under version control in an account you own.
Will the site go down during the handover?
No. The audit is read-only, and nothing changes until access is confirmed and backups are tested.
How does pricing work?
After a free scoping call you get a written proposal setting out the scope, the cost and a planned timeline, so you know what you are agreeing to before work starts.
Will we be locked in to you instead?
No. Everything moves into accounts you own, with documentation written for whoever looks after it next.
